So that was weird.
I went down to the Mission District today for my audition. It was at the, Artist Television Access studio on Valencia. First off, once I get off bart and walk up stairs I feel home all around me. The streets are a lot like TJ, Alex and I even buy a bootleg dvd for kicks! Anyway, so we walk the 4 or 5 blocks to the studio and I'm way early. We try to blow off some time by looking into some far out shops (one was wall to wall covered with bright colored candles of saints, and reeking of incense!)...but it's no use, I'm nervous and the time isn't moving fast enough.
So, I go in, and get the script, talk to the director for like 1/2 a second and dived into the script. It was an odd script, very heavy on the visual effects, and extremely light on the dialogue. It was a serial dream like setting of bits and pieces of the end of a relationship between the two characters, Will and April. It read a bit like this was a horrible break up for the director (and writer), and now in this script he could say all the things he wished he could have said, and she says everything he always wanted to hear. There are some good bits, here and there, but it didn't blow me away.
So, I read it a few times, and I work out my MF. (For all of those people that aren't from MCTC, MF stands for motivational force. If you'd like to know more, email me and we'll talk about it over coffee!) I went upstairs and jumped right in.
And the whole thing got stranger. It was me, the director, and a video camera. And right off he said, "Now I'll be reading the lines of Will, but don't act off of me, act off the camera." Well, where I learned the craft of acting, we RE-act, and to tell someone to act off a little box of black plastic sounds pretty crazy to me. So, we went through all of it, and I knew he wanted more drama from me, I could feel it. And, so he asked if I had ever done any really dramatic work, so I told him some names of plays I've done scenes from. But I don't know, I don't think I showed him what he was looking for. We'll see though. He said he'd let me know within a week and a half.
Then we jumped on a bus and went to see, Broken Flowers. It's really good. Slow, but the good kind of slow. I think it's Bill Murray's best performance. I don't want to go into it too much, I don't want to ruin anything for anyone, but I will say that I thought the ending was beautiful, and I recommend everyone reading this to go and see it!
That's all for now folks! Oh, I will say this, in my search to find a better job then the retail hell which is Old Navy, I landed an interview on Tuesday for a reservation's position at a fancy hotel restaurant on Geary! One can only hope....
